To me, a reason is just an explanation of cause and effect: My car skidded into the ditch because the road was icy. An excuse is an attempt to justify an act: I was distracted by my kids when I lost control on the ice and skidded into the ditch. The "reason" implies no moral cause for an action; an "excuse" attempts to justify the action, usually an attempt to shift blame away from the self.
