The problem is, what is a "blue" or "red" state? My own state, Washington, is considered blue because most of the population is left of center...but most of the population lives in the Puget Sound area. The rest of the state is largely red. We're one of many states where more state (and federal) money flows out from the "blue" areas to fund the "red" areas.

Many states are like this, red in the rural areas, blue in the urban regions. It makes "succession" a more difficult concept.
