I abandoned Gmail for my personal email service years ago. I don't want Google looking over my shoulder. I've long had my own domain, and my email is now hosted by pobox.com ($50/year), and I read (usually) with Apple Mail, or with the Fastmail.com web client. I still retain a couple of gmail email addresses for convenient alternative addresses, but rarely use them.
