Asimov as an author was a victim, one might say, of his time, when female characters were not frequent or well-done. That doesn’t excuse his behavior, of course. Similarly, Tolkien lived in the largely male world of British academia. Yes, his female characters are few, but they are portrayals of women in positions of power and playing pivotal roles in the outcome of the story.
